What it is for

The most common reason a good desk gets thrown out is that it does not move. Buying the frame alone fixes that without losing the surface: the crossbar telescopes from 39.4 to 63.3 inches, which covers almost every ready-made top in that size class as well as a door, a scaffold board or a piece of worktop cut to size. No top is included, which is the whole point.

Check before you order. No desktop is supplied and none of the mounting holes are pre-drilled, because there is nothing to pre-drill them into. Budget for a top, a drill and a depth stop before ordering, and check the intended top is at least 3/4 inch thick so screws have something to bite.

What assembly actually means

Two jobs rather than one. The frame itself bolts together in about half an hour. Marking and drilling the top is the part that takes care: set the frame on the underside, square it by measuring both diagonals, mark through the mounting holes, then pilot-drill to a depth stop so no screw comes through the face.

What it changes

A telescoping crossbar means the frame can be squared to a top that is not a standard size, instead of the top having to match the frame.
One column keeps the underside of the finished desk almost entirely clear, which is what makes a home-built desk usable for storage underneath.
The 28.3 to 46.5 inch range is the same as the complete desks, so a self-built desk gets the full standing height rather than a shortened one.
