Desks with Storage

The same column as the plain desks, with the thing you would have bought separately already attached.

This is the largest section in the catalogue, and it splits cleanly in two before you look at a single dimension. Six of these desks come with a drawer unit and a monitor shelf. Five come with a slide-out keyboard tray. They solve opposite problems and it is worth being honest about which one you actually have.

The drawer desks are for rooms where the desk is the only storage. The unit hangs under the top and rises with it, so the contents stay reachable standing as well as seated, and the monitor shelf takes 26.4 pounds, which covers a screen and a laptop stand but not a screen on a heavy arm. The trade is depth: a drawer unit occupies the space your knees want, so on the 40 and 44 inch tops it sits to one side and the usable leg room is narrower than the top suggests.

The keyboard tray desks are for people who type. A tray drops the keyboard roughly two and a half inches below the top, which is the difference between wrists that are flat and wrists that are bent back all day, and it does that without asking the column to go lower than it can. If you have ever put a desk at its minimum height and still found it too high, this is the section that fixes it. The tray also clears the top completely, which is what turns a desk into a place you can write on.

Beyond that split the sizes follow the plain desks: 40 and 44 inches for a corner, 48 for the usual case, 55 for two screens. Every model keeps the 28.3 to 46.5 inch column, four presets and the 176 pound rating.

Questions about desks with storage

Does the drawer unit move with the desk?
Yes. It is fixed under the top rather than standing on the floor, so it rises and falls with the desk and the contents stay at the same relative height whether you are sitting or standing. That is also why it eats into knee room.
How much does the monitor shelf hold?
It is rated to 26.4 pounds. That is comfortable for a monitor on its own stand or a laptop riser, and not enough for a monitor arm, which concentrates its load on a small footprint and belongs clamped to the desktop itself.
Can a keyboard tray be added to a plain desk later?
Not from this catalogue. The trays here are fitted to the desks that ship with them, so if you want one it has to be chosen at the start. This is the main reason to read this section before the plain desks rather than after.
